I’m with you. Deconstruction/postmodernism took the campus during Levin. It’s been a transition hardly to be believed.

I didn’t think I’d be speaking out I favor of “conservative” ideas as an alumni, but between the revisionist renaming of Calhoun and the instant emasculinization of the Whiffs, it has come.

It’s one thing to choose to ignore the past by looking away from an uncomfortable label (Calhoun) because the history is relatively settled and accepted. A Black alumni of Calhoun College can vocally dislike the change. But the Whiffs have just doomed themselves. There are very very few places I can think of in our society where lighthearted masculine culture is free from criticism and censorship. Each generation of Whiffs has the opportunity to live in a musical tradition and enjoy that culture. But now the group has decided to come down to the level of every other beat-boxing pop-loving side-show. I hope the next class reconsiders before the gigs dry up.

Boy do I feel you when it comes to Yale itself. But this isn’t Yale; it’s the Whiffs! Don’t the alums call the shots, rather directly, in what is after all not even a Yale organization any more than Mory’s is? How was it that your values and opinions weren’t heard loudest of all in this particular case? (I was rather shocked by this development myself.)

I think there is a place for tradition. Accepting transgender members, which makes sense to me, is a very different thing than going co-ed.

Now they need to do this with opera. Any man who wants to sing Butterfly (which, when you get right down to it, is a piece of racist cultural appropriation anyway) should be allowed to audition. Likewise women who want to sing Otello. But only women of color because for a white person to sing this role would be unspeakably racist.

Two biological sexes; more than two genders.

It’s about music. The sound of an all-male a cappella group is unique, as is the sound of an all-female group. Each has its own beauty. Mixing the two sounds creates something different — not inferior, but different.
